Recognition by country in 2024

Most applications in 2024 come from Turkey, followed by Tunisia and India. Hungary has the highest positive recognition rate in 2024 at 95 per cent, followed by Portugal and Libya at 93 per cent each. Sri Lanka and Azerbaijan also have positive recognition rates of over 90 per cent.

Hungary has the highest positive recognition rate in 2024 at 95 per cent, followed by Portugal and Libya (both 93 per cent), Sri Lanka (92 per cent) and Azerbaijan (91 per cent). In contrast, the rates of positive recognition notices have fallen significantly in some countries that were still at the top of the list last year: Austria has seen a sharp decline (from 96 per cent to 28 per cent), while Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Romania and Honduras have each lost between 40 and more than 60 percentage points. On the other hand, positive recognition rates rose sharply in Libya, North Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, among others, with increases of more than 50 percentage points in some cases compared to the previous year. Despite slight declines, Hungary and the Czech Republic remain countries with high positive recognition rates.

There has also been a significant shift in the proportion of notices requiring compensatory measures: while Uzbekistan led the way in 2023 with 72 per cent, Honduras recorded by far the highest proportion of notices requiring compensatory measures in 2024, at 90 per cent. High proportions of 60 per cent and above can also be found in India and Kosovo, Thailand, Venezuela, Vietnam, Mexico and Romania, as well as in the countries of former Yugoslavia, Serbia, Iran, Syria, Tunisia, Slovakia and Algeria.

There have been increases in cases of partial equivalence particularly in China, Ukraine, Belarus, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Argentina and Brazil. In contrast, there are significantly fewer partial recognitions in Kosovo, Vietnam, Morocco and Moldova, among others.

In 2024, by far the most applications again came from Turkey (7,857). This confirms the trend that began last year: Turkey continues to significantly expand its leading position as the country with the highest number of applications. Tunisia (5,250) and India (4,749) now follow in second and third place. Bosnia and Herzegovina (3,723), which was among the top countries in previous years, continues to fall behind and ranks fifth in 2024 after Syria (3,774) and the Philippines (3,531). Although the Philippines remains among the countries with the highest number of applications, unlike Turkey (+40.6%), it has seen a decline in the number of recognition notices issued compared to 2023 (−20.0%).

Significant increases in the number of recognition notices can be seen in particular for Turkey (+40.6%), Tunisia (+25.9%), India (+46.8%), Syria (+35.7%), Iran (+61.4%) and Ukraine (+136.7%). The number of cases has increased significantly compared to the previous year, particularly for Iran (+61.4%) and Ukraine (+136.7%), moving these countries of origin into the top group of countries with the highest number of applications. There has also been a noticeable increase in the number of recognition notices for Colombia (+85.1%), Vietnam (+44.0%), China (+36.5%) and Mexico (+18.6%).

Declines in recognition notices are particularly evident in the Western Balkan states of Bosnia and Herzegovina (−12.4%), Serbia (−10.0%) and Albania (−11.7%) as well as in the Philippines (−20.0%); however, these countries still maintain relatively high overall levels.

In the lower and middle range of case numbers, the ranking of countries remains largely stable, but is supplemented by individual countries of origin which have recorded more than 100 notices for the first time: Nepal (111 notices), Sri Lanka (123 notices), Pakistan (147 notices) and Kenya (210 notices).
