The International and Specialized Placement (ZAV) is responsible for international services within the Federal Employment Agency (BA). The BA works with many high-ranking domestic and international cooperation partners. The focus is on the immigration of skilled workers from abroad and the placement of special professional groups.

The ZAV is the central point of contact for all questions about working and living in Germany. With its information and advisory services, the ZAV supports foreign employees - both before and after entry - to quickly find their way around Germany and to feel welcome.

For more in-depth advice, the ZAV offers a professional estimation about your chances on the labour market and gives lots of information about migration topics like visa, recognition and learning German.

Questions can be asked after each lecture, as well as during the lecture via the chat function.

More than 70 percent of the recognition procedures for foreign professional qualifications obtained in EU member states end with a full equivalence. The positive recognition rate for the Netherlands is the highest as it reaches 94 percent. It is followed by Austria, Latvia, Hungary, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.

The majority of recognition notifications are granted to applicants trained in Syria. Doctor is the most common profession among Syrian applicants. Further recognition notifications are issued for office clerks, dentists, pharmacists, general care nurses and IT specialists. The most applications for recognition processed in 2018 were filed by the Syrians. The majority of recognition notifications were issued for doctors. A much lower number of recognition notifications concerned dentists, pharmacists, general nurses and office clerks. For most professions, the number of applications is between 30 and 70.

During this WebTutorial, we focus on the recognition of foreign qualifications.

The first part of the tutorial is about “Working and Living in Germany”. The content includes the German job market, skills shortage, visa, social security system, application and job search, including the presentation of our services.

In the second part of the tutorial, we will go into detail about the recognition of foreign qualifications - academic and non-academic. We will give a rough outline how the process works and illustrate it with case studies.

Recognition by profession 2021
The rate of full equivalencies varies by profession. The success rate of positive recognition for the regulated professions is between 35 and 70 percent, except for the profession of general care and pediatric nurse, which has a low success rate of 24 percent. Furthermore, the proportion of decisions of full equivalence for the non-regulated occupation of cook is the highest at 86 percent. This is immediately followed by the occupations of elec-trician, industrial electrician, and metal technology specialist with over 70 percent.
